The first thing that catches your attention about a PC is the computer screen. The computer monitor, as it is known in trade circles, is basically a cathode-ray tube (CRT), similar to the one used in television (TV) sets. Unlike TVs, a computer monitor does not have a channel tuner but will take video signals directly from the PC. It also has very minimal environmental effects, which allows you to sit very close to it.

Other things that you will note will be the keyboard and the mouse. The keyboard allows you to input keystrokes and the mouse allows you to point and click on objects displayed on the monitor. The monitor, keyboard and mouse have wires that connect them to a biege-coloured box called the PC cabinet. This steel box houses many important components of the PC. The cabinet is also connected to the power mains to provide electrical current to the PC. Because many PC components cannot operate with alternating current (AC) and instead use direct current (DC), a component called the SMPS inside the cabinet converts AC from the mains to DC. The wires that connect the mouse and the keyboard to the cabinet carry both DC and data. Some components such as the monitor and multimedia speakers operate with AC and have wires that allow them draw electric power directly from the mains. And, of course, the monitor and speakers have other wires that connect them to the cabinet so that they get data signals from the PC.
